The children's room

The children's room

The children's room is much more than just a room – it is a castle, a refuge, a cradle, an oasis for imagination, and a starting point for the great journey of the little person. Over time, the children's room transforms into a library, a „laboratory” for all kinds of experiments, or simply „the locked room at home.” The ideal balance between creativity and practicality in decorating the children's room allows it to grow along with your child. With a little imagination, suitable colors, and enough thematic accessories, you can create a room that looks towards the future of your treasure.

Often, overly enthusiastic future parents fall prey to their own ideas of a „cute” baby room, even thematically decorated under the sign of a favorite children's fairy tale or animation. Definitely, such a room gives freedom to imagination, but it quickly becomes uninteresting for the little rascal. A more practical option is to achieve the baby look of the room with the help of additional accessories, which you can remove as soon as the child changes their mood, and this will happen often in the future, believe me. Moreover, it is good to keep in mind that this is your child's room – you probably have your own idea of the ideal children's room that, for example, you did not have, but it is wiser to wait for your child's opinion on the matter. For starters, just be as practical as possible.

The first step before you embark on the long shopping trip is to examine the chosen room and ensure that it is suitable for a baby, without forgetting that it grows really fast. Check what the light is like in the room at different times of the day – too strong morning light will wake the little one (and you for sure) earlier than you would wish. On the other hand, a corner that is illuminated by street lighting at night will keep your little treasure awake just when you think it is time for them to sleep. According to the ancient Chinese teaching of Feng Shui, the most peaceful sleep is ensured when the bed faces the door of the room and at least one side is tightly pressed against the wall. The bed should not be next to a window.

What are the main elements in the children's room?

Let's start with the furniture. What is really necessary and what just adds to the coziness? If you decide to be truly practical, the truth is that for most babies it is almost indifferent whether they sleep in a plastic crib lined with a soft blanket or in a crib more luxurious than your own. And yet, let's not go to such extremes. The list of truly necessary furniture for the baby room includes:

  • Crib – there are two options: a typical baby crib that will serve you for about two years or one that has the necessary attachments but can also accommodate a bigger sleeper – with suitable hanging and rotating toys and decorations, the crib becomes „baby” again. There are also cribs, which „grow with the child“ through special attachments for size adjustment. You can assess for yourself which is the more practical solution. It is good to remember that the color of the wood of the crib is determining for both the other furniture and the colors of the room. Pay special attention to the quality of the mattress; it is preferable to buy a special hypoallergenic mattress. Some safety measures: The recommended distance between the wooden slats of the crib is no more than 6 cm. The baby crib should not be near heating appliances, windows, or electrical outlets. Do not overdo the decoration inside the crib to avoid the risk of suffocation for the child.
  • Changing table or changing station – you can opt for a special piece of furniture (table or dresser) or adapt the clothing dresser. You can place a shelf nearby – this way all necessary toiletries will be „at hand.”.
  • Cabinet or wardrobe – do not forget that initially the baby has few clothes, but their quantity increases with each passing day.
  • Nursing chair – if you cannot afford a special rocking chair, use an armchair decorated with cushions in suitable colors for this purpose.

Once you have gathered everything necessary, it is time to unleash your imagination.

The main highlights in the nursery are:

The walls – Painting the walls in neutral warm colors allows for decoration with thematic, but movable wallpaper and saves effort and money from gluing wallpaper. Colorful prints from your (and your friends') hands will create a sufficiently colorful and fun atmosphere, completely capturing the baby's attention. If you are more confident in your artistic skills, you can also use markers for smiley faces, for example. If you still prefer wallpaper, it would be more prudent for them to be washable.

  • The flooring – parquet (natural or artificial) is the easiest to maintain and does not retain dust, which often causes allergies. In addition, this flooring is the most resistant to all the upcoming experiments of your child in their own territory. A carpet that is easy to clean comes in second place in practicality. As for color, the dark range is most suitable for the floor, hiding some of the inevitable damages.
  • The windows – when choosing window coverings (curtains or blinds), look for those that are easy to maintain and wash. The curtains should not be longer than the window sill to ensure at least some peace for the days when the little one starts to walk. Since the baby orients itself to the time of day mainly by light, completely covering blinds may be the perfect solution for you and your sleepless nights. Additionally, some models of blinds offer window insulation. This way, the baby's afternoon nap will be protected from light and noise.
  • The ceiling – While preparing the nursery, don't forget that in its first months, the baby will spend most of its time lying down, with its gaze completely focused on the ceiling. It would be wonderful if it discovers a pleasant surprise here. Of course, the most impressive for the little one are bright colors and all possible types of hanging toys, even glowing stars at night.
  • Lighting – The light in the nursery should be soft, almost dimmed. Table lamps and lampshades are suitable, as well as toys , which combine melodies and light
